1) The title of the book comes from Annemarie's nickname. It is shug as in sugar. The nickname came from one of the characters in the book The Color Purple. The characters name was Shug Avery.

2) Thanksgiving with the Honeycutts did not go very well because Annemarie's dad commented about her mom's drinking and she got mad. I have had a holiday like this but I'd rather not talk about it.

3) At the dance Mark {Annemarie's best friend/ crush} danced with her but later while getting her coat she heard him say that he danced with her because he felt sorry for her.

1) Annemarie's mom, sister, and dad all call her Shug. This is because her mom's favorite book, The Color Purple, has a main character named Shug Avery. The book is also Annemarie's favorite book. Her mom also uses the nickname to shorten Sugar.

2) Thanksgiving with the Honeycutts did not go over smoothly. After the women of the family spent all day and all week cleaning the house and preparing the meal they will have on that day, Billy (dad) made a rather rude and embarrassing comment about the mother's drinking too much. They fought right in front of their guests.

3) Annemarie was hurt by Mark, who was her supposed best friend and also her secret crush. After a long awaited dance, Mark made a rude comment about Annemarie. He said that he felt bad for her and that she can't dance and she is barely a girl. Afterwards, Jack rightfully punched him out, resulting in a suspension.

1) The title of the book comes from Annemarie's nickname, Shug, as in sugar, that her parents gave her.

2) The Thanksgiving with the Honeycutts was quite embarrassing for Shug and Celia because Mrs. Wilcox had too much to drink and became drunk. No, I've never had a holiday experience like that.

3) At the dance, Annemarie was hurt when she saw Mark kissing Hadley. She was also hurt when she overheard Mark telling his friends that he felt sorry for her and that she was barely a girl.
