2009 BLOOD ON THE RIVER by Elisa Carbone

1. Where did Samuel come from and why did he end up in the New World?

2. Did Pocahantas really save Captain John Smith’s life? Or do you think she was playing a role in a special ceremony?

3. Why did Samuel kidnap Virginia? Was this the right thing to do? Why or why not?

Bonus: Where might our word “wow” have come from?

1)Samuel came from London, England and came to the New World because he lived on the streets. When the police took custody of him, he was sent to an orphanage, where Reverend Hunt thought he would make a good page/apprentice. So they went to the New World.
2)She was playing a role in a special play. She was Chief Powhatan's favorite daughter.
3)Samuel thought she would be safer at Point Comfort. It was the right thing to do because the Indians attacked James Town, so 1/3 of the population was wiped out. Also, the Indians slaughtered their hogs, which were their main source of meat. The Indians were dangerous if they stayed there.
Bonus:Wow might have come from "Powwow", The Algonquin language.

1)Samuel came from London, England. He came to the New World with Revrend Hunt {the owner of the orphanage he was at} because Revrend thought he would go to keep himself out of trouble and to learn a lesson so he became a page to Captian John Smith.

2)Pochahantas was playing a role in a play. They were acting out a play of death and rebirth.

3) Samuel kidnapped Virginia because he knew James Town was not safe and that the fort was way safer. I think it was the right thing to do because he made it safe for Virginia and Ann.

BONUS: The word wow might have came from the Algonquin word wow that means wonder or amazement.
